Barista : Our coffee comes from Discovery Roastery, finalists from this year's Canadian Barista Championships. We have the world's best espresso machine in the Synesso Cyncra. You'll be expected to continue this incredibly high standard with your skill and enthusiasm towards coffee.

Coffee shop, cafe, restaurant experience preferred but not essential
You'll be expected to taste (but not necessarily drink) several coffees a day so a taste for coffee is essential
A willingness to ride your bike to work is preferred

Food Menu Expands at the Broken Spoke......Finally

We've had a lot of pressure to expand our food menu here at the Spoke and so far we have resisted for a couple of reasons. Coffee is our number one priority. We make each cup to order. Our coffee featured in the final of both the Western and National Canadian Barista Championships. Our beans are never more than 14 days old. So if we take that kind of pride in our beverages how can we simply throw down a snack on the side that was made the day before or off site. Put simply, we can't, and finding food to accompany our coffee has been a challenging and delicious ordeal. We started with our muffins about a year ago, we baked them ourselves in batches of six from scratch. We sold six our first day and we were up to 12 within a few weeks. We sell about 40 a day now, and usually they are purchased while they are still warm from the oven.
So anyway, this week we introduced our sandwich menu. Short and concise but fresh and delicious. We get our meat and cheese from Runges, the German deli on fourth and for anyone who has yet to go there i highly recommend it. This week we are rocking just the meat and cheese selections but next week we'll bring in the Tuna and a vegetarian option.

Jack Leighton Comes to Town

Jack Leighton arrived at the Spoke last week to add weight to the anti HST protest. Too little too late perhaps but if there are still column inches being dedicated to the story no doubt politicians will continue to fight/talk against it. Having said that who are we to talk, it got us in the paper again.

Music Fest Bike Winner

The Broken Spoke was very happy to sponsor this year's wonderful Music Fest. It's a marquee event for Courtenay as well as the BC music scene and we were very happy to be involved in such a well laid out event. We donated a Cityzen Sub Zero bicycle for the raffle which is one of the ways Music Fest raises money to pay for artists and equipment. And happily for us the winner was Dian Smit of Nerds on Site IT services, a local girl who has just started her own business in the Valley and was volunteering at music fest to supply them with all their computer needs. So a just reward for Dian. Congrats
