The Broken Spoke Maintenance Program
The Broken Spoke is putting on a comprehensive maintenance program starting September the 27th. We are delighted to offer a 6 -week course with just 5 participants per class, so you have your own bike stand and tools for the full duration of the course! What's more, you are fixing your own bicycle, so at the end of the course you will have a clean, fresh bike that you will be able to repair in the future.
There are 6 sessions, each two hours in duration and you will spend a guaranteed 75% of that time working on your bike. Full course curriculum is posted at the bottom.
Cost: $100 (6 X 2hour sessions)
We are running the course on Monday or Thursday (the choice is yours)
Places fill up fast, so please book early.

Curriculum
- Week 1: Brakes - You will cut your brake cables and replace them with new ones. You will be shown how to change your pads and how to calibrate your brakes for optimal performance. We will help you through every step of the way until you are confident that you could do it in future.
- Week 2: Drivetrain - Part 1: This week you will take out your gear cables and housing and replace it with new parts. You will then have to recalibrate your gear system and in doing so learn the fundamentals of how gears work. This may sound difficult but by doing things in a step-by-step fashion and with continual support you will finish easily with time to spare.
- Week 3: Drivetrain - Part 2: Time to get our hands dirty this week. Cassette removal and cleaning, crank removal and cleaning. This is one of the most important lessons to learn to keep your bike in good condition and to improve the longevity of your vehicle.
- Week 4: Wheel truing: Two hours is enough to do the basics. We'll teach you how to change a spoke and how to get by without one if you break one on the road. This lesson will also be an introduction to our wheel building course that will take place in the summer.
- Week 5: Tires, tubes and pumps: One of the most important lessons and probably the most frequent repair an amateur mechanic has to deal with. It can also be one of the most frustrating to do right and quickly. Especially when you're by the roadside.
- Week 6: This week you will have two hours on the stand to reinforce all the things you learned in the previous weeks. Its a chance to reinforce the knowledge you have acquired and also ask any bike-related questions you still have.
